MMI & 512 GB SDXC Cards
I just picked up (2) SanDisk 512 GB SDXC Cards for the Audi but I wasn’t sure if the MMI system would recognize them, but it did and they seem to work great. The cards were not cheap and their performance specs were so above what will be utilized in the car — but that’s the price you pay.
As I rip my music at e tremendous rates (for other home uses) the files I create are very big but rather than having to rip the same files twice, I just stick the same files on the cards going into the S5. Yes — the limitation on music files in the car is how many root directories you can enter, but I have not bumped into that limit - yet.

Do you organize into playlists? If so, can you share a screenshot of your directory structure of the disk as seen on your computer? I'm aware that the manual outlines the process — just curious how another owner does it.

I purchased a 256GB card for my S5 snd copied all the music from my iPod (which I had in my Mercedes) onto it. Unfortunately Audi has a limit of 10000 files, so I had to prune bask the files considerably. Quite disappointed by the limit!

Do not do play lists — In my system each artist has their name on a directory in the card’s root. Under each artist there are sub-directories named for the album. Doing it this way I don’t think I’ll run into the problem of hitting the maximum number of root directory entries.

Do you guys convert the file to a flac format or something else? Does it sound better than cabled smart phone, CD, etc. or is it for organizational reasons?

I converted all mine from wav to FLAC so i get CD quality which sounds better than bluetooth and i populated all the metadata so i can use the car's built-in ability to list by artists, albums, etc...

It’s pretty foolproof and quick.

If anyone else is thinking about it, i started this FLAC thread long time ago and included the settings i used with dBPowerAmp to make car specific level adjustments and I'm still very happy with the result: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/aud.../#post25049360

The program that I use (Windows-based) — just to show there are many different programs / options is EZ-CD Audio Converter which provides a 21 day “Freeware trial” period.
I like the options and the fact that a “lifetime” free upgrade is offered — and it notifies you when one is available.

I have done essentially the same for all my music for the car. Since I had all my CDs ripped to WAV files, I used fre:ac to batch convert them into FLAC. All ithe music is in a flat file and the MMI is set to play random, I don't know which artist or which genre will play next. one moment I may be listening to Queen the next one could be a violin concerto. I like the surprise element!
