Default Rain shield for backup camera

Has anyone come up with a way to keep the rear view camera lens clear in the rain? Very annoying when it is blurred by water that runs down over the lens, Perhaps a drop of Rainex? Kind of jealous of my son’s GTI with the concealed backup camera that stays clean.

I had the same issue with mine and I think it's partly due to the rounded fisheye lens that protrudes from the housing. I never had a problem with my old Lexus that had a flat lens that was level with the housing. I put a bit of Rain-X on the lenses of all four external cameras, but I can't say that's really helped.

A friend and I looked at coming up with a mechanism that delivers a short blast of compressed air across the lens as an after-market to this all too common problem — but we couldn’t make the R&D math work.

I’ve just gotten in the habit of wiping the lens off when I get in the car if it’s been raining. That doesn’t help when you’ve been driving in the rain and go to back in.

Thanks for the replies. I’m think some type of drip edge at the top of the housing is needed to get the water out past the lens. Have to look at it more closely to see if that is possible

The only feature element I miss from my Golf R. How can one company make a camera so good and so bad at the same time?

I agree. The fisheye camera already sucks, let's make it worse with rain. An improvement I mentioned in the improvement thread. https://www.audiworld.com/forums/aud...e-see-2942766/.

Mercedes had the right idea. The rear view camera retracts and only comes out when you go into reverse to stop any dirt and grime from getting on the lens.

The real problem is when driving in the rain road spray kicks up from below and gets on the camera lens making it dirty as well as wet.

I wish Audi would hide the back up camera under the badge like VW and MB do. Yeah it know it would add cost but it would be so much nicer in rain or snow.

There's no excuse, Audi knows it works better and it would literally add only ~$25-$50 to the cost (at the high end)

A digression here, but I was in a 2018 A5 Cab loaner the other day and the rear-view camera was clearly different than in mine. It was shockingly bad for a car in 2018 - like 5+ years out of date. Is that a S5 vs. A5 thing? or a trim-level spec? It was a pretty bare bones A5 vs.my S5 prestige but the A5 clearly had a build date more recent than mine as the 2nd USB was under the dash. It was bad enough quality that I felt embarrassed for Audi.
