Removing the dashboard grills to get to the speakers
Someone asked me for instructions on how to remove the dashboard grills without breaking the clips.
So I thought this thread might prove useful to others too.
The Audi manuals tell you to remove the speaker grill first and then to remove the speaker grill frame. I think this is the biggest mistake most people do. I recommend removing them both together, unless you very specifically want to remove just the speaker grill. e.g. incase you want to put foam between the grill and the frame to stop vibrations etc)
Another big mistake that people make is starting from the front. You always start from the back (closest to the windscreen) and corners.
Hopefully the pictures below will make everything clear. I've shown the centre grill being taken out, but it's exactly the same technique for the side grills too. The Passenger's side grill had 3 clips and the Driver's side had only 2 clips. But again, there is no need to take out the grills and grill frames separately.
Before we start.
Start from one corner and lift up slightly.
Go to the opposite corner and lift up slightly
work your way around only lifting slightly and equally.
Lift equally all around.
Once the front and the sides are lifted, there is still a clip in the centre near the windscreen.
Put equal pressure from both corners and lift upwards will free the centre clip.
Almost there.
Yup, all done.
Now get rid of that awful center speaker. See the fabulous Faitalpro 4FE32 installed and being test fitted.
See the positions of the grill frame clips. The ones shown in Red as the ones notorious for breaking because people remove the ones shown in Yellow first and then fold that frame towards the windscreen, thus breaking them. Always lift parallel to the dashboard.

Thank you, Bruce! Had I “the power” I would start a whole new Sub-Forum for Audio Systems & Speaker Replacement for our members, both current & future, who have or acquire our cars as 2nd owners.
My appreciation to all the members who have shared their experiences with upgrades. You are what make AudiWorld so enjoyable!
Thank You

I've been dragging my feet on this install because I was afraid of breaking the clips. Thanks for the details Bruce. I've already trimmed the frame of my peerless midrange and I have new tweeters standing by.

What I find completely frustrating is that there is so much overlap between the A4 variants and the A5 variants that they actually should have been the same forum. Where there are genuine differences only they should have gone in different sub sections.
So often people post questions in an RS5 section about something so simple, when the answer has been sitting in the A4 forum all along.

Prepare to be amazed when you swap the tweeters. I just cannot understand what Audi where thinking when they set the crossover of those A pillar tweeters to 8KHz.

There are quite a few things in the B&O system that can only be explained by Cocaine. I often joke that when they were supposed to be designing the system they just snorted a long like of coke in the shape of Germany and then rolled around in the ASK parts bin until 17 speakers were stuck to them.

I finished mine. The mid is well worth the trouble. The tweeter, maybe not so much but it's not that hard to do.
