^^

I agree, this is the BMW sweet spot - has the soul of when they were great. It feels like a descendant of the older 3 series, which were great drivers cars. If I was in the market for a smaller car, this would be a finalist. Despite the very ordinary interior.

From a looks perspective I don't find the 4-Series Grand Coupe to look all that different than a 3-Series. Most of us on here can probably spot the different but I feel like an S5 SB has a much more unique look to it. Their 4 door 6-series is beautiful but I don't get that feeling from the 4.

Granted it looks a bit puny compared to the 440 or S5, but it's got it where it counts, and it's still quite practical for everyday use. The interior isn't quite as nice as the 440, but the 440 isn't all that great either, and it's around $10k less expensive. I agree with everyone else that the Audi wins the tech, awd, and interior quality award.
That'd be fun, but too small for me. I play hockey 3x per week and a hatch is nice for the big bag. Need back doors for my kid. Need tolerable back seats for occasionally hauling around adults for work. Briefly considered the Golf R but I really need something more grown up for business use. The SB and the GC are really the only cars on the market that can check all the boxes for me.

If you're really accustomed to M-Sport Packaged BMWs, one other consideration may be the lack of Black Optics availability for the S5 SB. That will hopefully change soon, but I'm too accustomed to shadow-trimmed BMWs to live with all the Audi Alu-Optic stuff.

I'm still on the fence personally. I got an ED date from Audi today with an Exclusive color. I've got about six weeks before the order freezes. If Black Optics isn't available by then, I'll cancel the order and probably go with the BMW.

I've owned a bunch of Audis but I'd recommend the BMW. Audi has a slush box in the new S5, so no thanks. I've owned two S5s, one manual and one s-tronic. The tiptronic is a deal breaker.

Yeah. DSG in the A5 though, supposed to work quite well & make the little 4 cyl hustle.

The BMW 440i GC and the S5 use the same ZF8HP transmission. There is no manual option in either.

I'm always surprised by the GTI. Every time I get behind the wheel, I simply love it! If I didn't need ground clearance for my backpacking trips, I would own a GTI today. When you consider the price -- $35k loaded -- it can be hard to justify $50k+ Audis and BMWs.

That "little" 4 cylinder is more powerful and has more torque than V6s and V8s when I was learning to drive. It's a great engine!

Agree. There's a lot of tech in that 2.0! I'm going to drive an A5 tomorrow just to see if I really actually need the S5.
