Default Tall driver/2018 S5 Sportback

Hi all,

First time caller, long time listener.

I currently have a 2012 A5 (3.0 TDi Black Edition quattro, if it matters) and I love it. I'm pretty tall (6' 5"/195 cm) and have no problems with the A5. It's obviously pushing on a bit now and with the recent arrival of a rug rat, it's unfortunately time for something more practical - ie, with more doors, before I destroy my back moving a loaded child seat in and out of the rear.

I've been looking at used 2018 S5 Sportbacks and had assumed they would have at least as much headroom and legroom as my 2012 A5, but after reading some of the posts on this forum, I'm not so sure.

Any tall 2018 S5 drivers here, and if so, what has your experience been? If you wouldn't mind mentioning your height too, that would be very helpful. I know it's not simply a matter of height, some people have long torsos, others long legs, but it would give me some idea of what to expect. Unfortunately, there are virtually no recent S5s for sale where I live (local dealerships peobably don't have any in stock either, they're not big sellers here), so it's not so easy to test in the flesh. I'm looking to import from the UK so I'd need to know in advance if this is a runner before I make a move.

Thanks for your help.

I'm 6'-4" and have a 2018 S5- SB. Height is not an issue. I am able to have a comfortable driving position and still have lots of room.

6'2" - Fine in front seat, one finger above head in rear. Best you make a trip to the dealer and test for yourself. At 6'5" it might be a tight squeeze.

6'2" also.. I don't officially own a A/S/RS5 SB yet (on order) but I've sat in a few and typically end up with about 2-2.5 finger widths between my head and roof (sunroof model). I think the SB has like a half an inch more head room than the coupe (front seats).

I found exactly the opposite. I felt like there was more room above my head in the RS5 coupe over the sportback. I know its not supposed to be that way!

I’m 6’5” and I drive a B9 A5 coupe; I found that I had a little more room in the coupe than the sport back. I’m not sure if that’s because how the roof line slopes down.

Sort of off topic but has any tall person that has a few finger width above your head ever track your car where you had to wear a helmet? If so, how did that go?

I'm 6'4" with a short torso. Long arms and legs.
I have no problem with headroom due to my short torso. My kids and I (they are my size and late teens) have issues with the leg and head room in the back, though.
If I put the seat back enough to get the most comfortable eating position, I have difficulty reaching the car's dash controls. I find that I need to be a bit closer to the steering wheel than ideal, but it is still plenty comfortable, even during long rides.

You will have 10mm more headroom in the Sportback than the Coupe.

You can find any A5 Coupe or Sportback to check; it doesn't have to be an S5. Headroom is the same across all engine variants.
