Tire pressure monitoring system...
I'm really surprised to find that the 2018 S5 coupe doesn't have an informational display of the actual tire pressure, unless I missed something...

No in-wheel sensors in these newer cars to provide that info.

Yeah I was also surprised. The system will give an alert if a tire feels like it has more rolling resistance but you have to input the tire pressures as being correct to clear it.
The bright side is swapping tires is easier.

Note that the kit come with a 'cable set' and a 'control unit' which leads me to believe that a receiver for the wheel sensors is needed and then wired into the car so the MMI can read it.

Do you have a 2018 or 19? In 2018 the direct TPMS was part of one of the option packages, but its standard in 2019. If you have it, you need to hit the [ on the steering wheel while on the first tab in the VC (the one that has the trip computer), it will give you an option for trip computer, sport displays, lap timer etc. Select the Sport display, it will show the G meter and scroll down to get to the tire pressure and temperature display.
