Default Topping up oil on the S5 SB

Hello everyone.

Have a quick question. What kind of oil does the S5 use exactly? I’m quite sure it’s 5w30 but not 100%.

I’m currently on a road trip and got a warning on my dash that I need to add maximum 1.25 because oil is low. I have my car manual at home and can’t figure out where the dipstick is. I might just open the oil cap and top it up a bit into there but want to make sure. Also don’t want to drive long distances low on oil lol. Thank you for any help I may get!

Get the Castrol Edge Performance 0W-20. You should just stop by your Audi dealer and grab a bottle. On the bottle it should say it meets VW 508 or 509 standards.

If you cannot find the right oil, then you can fill up to half a quart of high quality synthetic 0W-30, 5W-30, or 5W-40 oil.

And the S5 does not have a dipstick. If you want a physical dipstick you have to go aftermarket or make your own. There are several threads that cover this subject. I elected to buy one:

I bought it at ECS Tuning — not cheap, but neither was my S5!

Does a Tiguan dipstick still work in the B9?

I've been wondering if that dip stick would work in the RS5 since both engines are pretty similar but ESC's website says it doesn't fit.

I remember another member asking if the ECS S5 dipstick would fit an A5 and the answer they got back was a solid “NO” — don’t waste your money. I am a little surprised that the RS engine is different enough, but if ECS is saying no, I guess they know what they are talking about.

In Australia, Castrol don't import 0W20 Edge and neither do Audi. They both insist 5W30 Edge is fine.

I can't quite understand why 0W20 is required in the rest of the world but 5W30 is OK here. It would be great to be able to get comprehensive answers to reasonable questions, but I gave up in despair after emailing Audi and Castrol Australia! I have a feeling the 0W20 might be to meet certain performance/emission standards rather than to ensure prolonged engine life, but I can't be sure of this. I have to trust Audi wouldn't jeopardize all the S5 engines in Australia by not ensuring they supply the right oil.

I guess I have more important priorities and I won't lose any sleep over this, but it does seem strange. Our cars do not have the sticker under the hood saying 0W20 is mandatory and there is no info in the owners manual re the correct oil. So, without reading internet forums I would be unaware the rest of the world are being told they must use 0W20.

PS I endorse the ECS dipstick for the S5. It's expensive (especially if you order it from downunder) but it's good quality and it does the job just fine.

So does anyone make a dipstick for the RS5 yet?

Thanks greatly for the replies.

Last concern...A friend found some Castrol 5w30 but it says C3. It writes vw502 compliant but also says will help Diesel turbo engines work better. The diesel part is scaring me a little don’t wanna put wrong oil in. Last resort is go to Canadian tire and get castrol high performance 5w30.
