Good news! Apple today announced that it is opening up CarPlay to third-party navigation apps. The slide they showed included Waze and Google Maps, but it will be up to the individual developers to implement. If past practice holds, the new version of iOS which will enable this (iOS 12) should be released at some point in September.
Not wanting to get into any Android vs Apple conversations at all, but my primary phone is an iPhone and I looking forward to not using Apple Maps with CarPlay.
While I find the fact that Audi wants $30 a month to continue with google maps on my MMI borderline infuriating (after all, my phone has an internet connection I pay for, just use it!), I saw that not only does BMW not offer Android Auto, but they charge a pretty good premium for CarPlay - and are even making CarPlay a subscription based service:
That's a possible slippery slope (and while it may never happen), can you imaging virtually every electronic feature becoming a possible subscription? i.e. Want remote lock / unlock - sure $5/month. TPMS - $4/month... ugh.

BMW has been doing what you describe for years, ever since I looked at buying the first generation X1 xdrive35i
Random question: Does anyone know if Waze support would somehow integrate directions into the HUD? Does it work that way by any chance for Android Auto?
Anyway, it's great to have Waze as an option, though I would miss using Google Earth maps in the virtual cockpit which simply looks great in my opinion.
