03 allroad vs. 04 XC-70
#5
The ruggedized station wagon hierarchy...
...in ascending order, is Subaru Outback, Volvo XC-70, and Audi allroad. If the XC-70 lease is "virtually the same" as the allroad lease, it seems like a no-brainer.
My own opinion would be to choose between the Outback and the allroad based purely on what's affordable. I suppose you could think of the Volvo as the compromise that's the best of both, but you could also think of it as a Ford.

Lease equal = Audi but...
XC70 is a very nice car, and good deals are available. My wife has had 3, and my last car was a heavily modded 855T.
We put 17's on her2001 to get rid of the wallow provided by the stock Pirelli "truck" tires, and now it is a nice ride. We tow a 3500lb boat with it, and use it as our winter ski vehicle, for lumber runs and as a general around-town car.
If the leases are really equal this is a no brainer -- go for the audi. If you are buying (like I did) I could not justify the extra 15K commanded by the allroad over the deal I got on the XC70.
They are solid and safe, but as the man says "I know audi, and you sir are no audi!"

that's about as REAL as it gets...
I've driven plenty of volvos (plenty of time at the wheel of the "hot" v70R) and can uniformally tell you they are uninvolving cars for people who think you have to have a boring car to have a safe car. In other words, THEY BLOW.

Driven plenty, but not enough...
There's a guy in Illinois who tunes old 4-cylinder turbo Volvos who routinely blows away members of the local Mustang club with his brick. And remember the DeLorean? You know, the car that contained the same old V6 as Volvo used for almost thirty years -- the engine for which all sorts of aftermarket performance kits were developed? Think serious suspension upgrades, imagine close to 700hp at the wheels...still sound boring? Not all Volvo drivers lack imagination.
Then again, when it comes to Volvos I prefer old school; the XC isn't at all worth considering with the allroad in the picture.
