Default 18" rims with Nokian WRs and 17" vs. 18" in general

I currently have OEM twin-spokes on my '01 ar with Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsports (from the previous owner). The front ones seem worn (and the rears not too far behind), so I am thinking of getting some new rubber before winter.

In the past I have had winter and summer rims/tires for some of my vehicles, but this time around, given the excellent review of the Nokian WR, quattro, and to save some $$ right now, I am leaning towards just one set. (We don't get a lot of snow, ice etc... every now and then.)

My choices:

1. - Get 17" Nokian WRs for the OEM twin-spokes, despite discussion of snow/slush/ice build-up in the spokes putting them out-of-balance, and take the less expensive route. (Con: Will need to have them mounted and balanced.)

2. - Get a new style of 17" rims with Nokian WRs, to avoid the build-up and out-of-balance issue. Ronal R-28 or RS6 reps come to mind. (Plus: Will come mounted and balanced.)

3. - Get 18" rims, with 245/45/18 Nokian WRs (is that the correct size?) on Ronal R-41 or possibly RS6 reps. (I believe with the Ronal R-41s, I wouldn't need spacers... can anyone confirm that?) (Plus: Will come mounted and balanced.)

How will option #3 perform in a winter environment? As I mentioned, I don't live where there is a huge amount of snow (but sometimes 4 to 6 inches). Usually for winter tires it is best to downsize... but since I'd be getting one set and am considering 18" rims, I figured I'd check with anyone whose BTDT. Anyone with 18" rims that have driven through winter, especially with Nokian WRs?

In general, will I notice a huge difference going to 18" rims vs. the 17" rims, in non-snow situations, to make it worthwhile? Do those of you with 18" rims find yourself not wanting to go off-road (i.e. light dirt, trail use or sand), thereby limiting versatility? Was your decision primarily for pavement handling and aesthetics? (I like the aggressive stance and the way that 18" rims fill out the wheelwell.) This car will be one of our primary family vehicles (next to our Honda Odyssey), so I don't want ride harshness and lack of versatility. Given that, should I stick with the 17" or go with 18"? (FWIW, I currently don't have plans for H-sports or 402 modding the vehicle.)

Thanks.

I would get the Nokian WR tires and mount them on your OEM twin-spokes and deal with the occasional snow build-up. You have until April to save the $$ needed to buy new 18" rims and summer tires.
