Default 2.7T or 4.2... that is the question!

Hi all,

I have been lurking for a while...
An allroad has been on my mind for a while, and I have looked at a couple.. in the next few months I will prob buy one.

I have been looking at 2.7T 6 speeds, but have noticed lately that some 4.2s (while still more $) have come down quite a bit on price.

I have not driven a 4.2L yet, how do those feel?
I really didn't want a tip (in the 2.7T anyway) but was thinking that it may be nice since my wife perfers not to drive stick.

Are the 4.2L tips a better trans than the 2.7T or do those also have the converter problems?

What are some real world MPG, I see people from 14 at 65, to over 20.. is there that much variation w/ simular driving?

thanks much,

-Bill

P.s. Which car is more reliable over time, 4.2 or 2.7T? Thinking the upfront cost of the 4.2 may pay off over time.

Default I have both....

Well I have both and drives both.... (Now I basically drives only the 2.7T 6 speed)

4.2 plus:
- more torque at low rpm
- more power
- Better breaks
- better for pulling a boat or.....
- no timing belt, chain instead

4.2 minus:
- gas mileage, especially city driving/traffic
- no manual
- limited mod capability

2.7T plus:
- manual 6 speed
- gas mileage much better than 4.2 (v6)
- great car for mods
- fun to drive

2.7T minus:
- breaks not as good as 4.2
- cost of turbos if not under warranty
- manual a pain in traffic

Overall, even the OEM 2.7T 6 speed is more fun to drive than the 4.2. Now that I drive the manual transmission, I can't stand the tiptronic anylonger....

If driving needs to have a fun factor for you, I would go with the 2.7T 6 speed. Otherwise take the 4.2....

Default 2nd that. I've had both (both in tip though).

Living in the DC metro area, there really aren't too many opportunities to have "spirited" drives, unless on a weekend, and a bit out in the country. Virginia is very tight with speeding, so I don't mind driving a tip. I opted for the 4.2 this time, because I didn't want to dump too much money in mods, and it's under warranty this time. )

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a manual, but I'm not losing too much sleep over it.

Default Yeah, Yeah...sooo many excuses NOT to buy a 2.7MT....but look at the picture in Arob' s sign ;-)

Just kidding ;-) By the time your car is out of warranty some tuner will have nice mods for the 4.2
C.U. on the track ;-)

Default Owning a ar 2.7T and 4.2 tips, and a B5 S4 6 speed

Mods: Nod to the 2.7T, although PES may change that 4.2 Supercharger

Reliability: Nod to the 4.2

Stick: Only one choice

Tip: In owning both tips, no comparison; the 4.2. 2.7T does use a different tip than the 4.2. 4.2 tip is the same model as used behind S6 and RS6.

Gas mileage: Nod to the 2.7T. Not much better with tip, but better with stick.

Towing: Nod to the 4.2

Exhaust note: Nod to the 4.2, stock or modified

My two cents. I say drive them all and make the decision.

Default Had 2.7T, now have 4.2

I had a 2001 2.7T and now have the 4.2, both as automatics.
Shifting is better in many ways on the 4.2.
My MPG between the two are basically the same. The wife and I drive into NYC everyday from NJ. The allroad is the winter car and averages about 16-17 mpg. On trips it averages about 18-20 MPG.
The feel of the cars differ only in the fact that the 4.2 has 18" rims and lower profile tires.

The main reasons for the move to the 4.2 for me where luxury items no longer available on the 2.7T. Ex: wood shift ****, power stearing column tied into the seat memory, solar sun roof, and V8 growl.
