2nd Car - M3 or 911
Slightly off topic though hopefully interesting to some.
I collapsed an A4 Avant and Porsche 993 into my allroad last year and been looking at what my next sports car will be to compliment the allroad.
I was leaning towards a 996 cab but had the opportunity to drive the new M3 with a sequential manual gear box in the weekend.
It was awesome. Loved the gear box and strong engine. The brakes were sensational. We were only allowed on a motorway so couldn't really feel how it handled. But, I've never been keen on BMW's.
What I found interesting though is that BMW seem to have overtaking Porsche in performance at a compelling price.
The next version of the 911 must have to be a fire breather. Doing some web searches there is speculation the '997' will have a wider rear track to accomodate an 8 cylinder engine (Not sure if it would be a flat 8 or v??).
Anyway things are pointing towards the next gen 911 being a big performance step up from the 996, which is already a fantastic car. But if I had to pick one now it would be hard to go past the M3.

Thats a tough one
I have thought to the future of what my next "fun" car will be. I recently sold my fun car. It was modest (2000 Saab Viggen Coupe) relative to what you are suggesting, but a fun ride for the money.
Once the M3 becomes more widely available I would probably consider it. I used to have a 328is and an M3 at one point. I think the M3 is a perfect blend of utility and sports car and you can save a few dollars to boot. One thing I like about my Viggen is that it had so much room for stuff like golf clubs. The Porsche is light on utility, but an awesome car. The only reason I would go for the Porsche is because I have never had the pleasure to own a Porsche and I have it on my life's to-do list.
I am in no rush for the next fun car. The allroad fills the void in the meantime. I might just wait to see what Porsche pushes out next. I might also consider a TT. It has grown on me.

Re: 2nd Car - M3 or 911
I've always thought that the 911 Carrera 4 would be a good sports-car complement to a quattro family car -- then you're always driving in AWD (albeit with somewhat different linkages) and don't have to "remember" which kind of handling you're dealing with.
On the other hand, I sat in a 911 at a dealership once (trying not to drool) and it felt cramped. So be sure to check that out. HPH

Re: You're very mistaken. BMW will not out-handle a Porsche
The new M3 is a sprint car. It's not going to handle nearly as well as any of the Porsches save maybe the Cayenne on the track. Yes, the M3 is faster than the Boxster, Boxster S and matches up closely to the '02 911 it doesn't offer the fun-to-drive quotient that any of the aforementioned Porsches do. That's my $0.02
I have a Targa on order.

Re: 2nd Car - 993
Well since the 993 Cab is already my 2nd car (actually 3rd), I drive '02 A6 4.2 and wife will be driving a '02 allroad in a week or so, I would say the obvious - 993.
If you are interested and in the NJ area, I may be parting with my '95 993 6 spd in a few months.
Either is a great 2nd car.
