Default 6MT - Has anyone had to have their 6MT rebuilt ->

My fathers allroad is going in to have 1st and 2nd gears rebuilt. The synchros died. The car is a 04 with 34+k on the clock so will be covered under warranty however it seems strange that they gears died. The most abuse the car sees is morning and afternoon traffic commuting to work from northern ma towards boston.

Default No problems with '04 @55k shifting to 1st on the fly is hard on synchros

After owning a touchy ALFA for years, I instinctively double clutch sometimes.

Double clutching saves synchros. The ALFA wouldn't go to 1st without double clutching and going to 2nd before first at a dead stop.

Never force the shifter into gear if it doesn't want to go.

Default Thanks for the info... Well aware of the shifting into first etc.

Pops and I have been auto tox and drivers ed for years, just seems strange for something like this to happen.

Default I think its the first posting of this problem...

I have 126K on my allroad. One thing I will say and most will agree that the 1-2 and 2-1 shift is the hardest of the shifts.

Your dad may just style his shift as a faster shift than the system really likes. He does AutoX, sospeed may be his reflex. Considering he is in cummuter traffic, then the 1-2 and 2-1 is going to see a lot of action.

Fortunatly it is a warranty item.

Default Agreed however with pops now well into his 60's it has been a few years

since his last auto tox but I suspect the reflex is still there.

Default My second gear is so uber crunchy....

...I was just thinking about this while tracking around Boulder during morning errands. My First and second gear have been der Krunch since 70k, at least.

I have all the syncros and parts in a box in my garage, and I think I may pull the tranny sometime before it gets stupid cold again. I've heard it's a snap ring party in there, so I'll probably pad the floor and tent/tarp off our spare room (seriously), and turn it into the operating room.
