A8 air springs are inside a metal sleeve eliminating wear from debris
or so a dealer technician informed me the other day. I was in the shop examining the repairs to mine when he made the comment. The point was that they just replaced their first A8 air spring recently. Perhaps the focus should be on the design of a flexible or collapsable protective sleeve for the front springs. Someone can become rich :-)

Re: A8 air springs are inside a metal sleeve eliminating wear from debris
I am not so convinced that road debris is the real culprit for the tears in the front air suspensions of our cars. If that were the case, then the rear ones would collapse just as frequently - but they don't even though they are subjected to the same amount of road debris.
I think that the front springs are more prone to collapse due to their closeness to the engine and their higher exposure to heating-and-cooling cycles, which in turn weakens the material of which the air bladders are made.
So, perhaps, a metal sleeve linked with the AC system would be the REAL solution!

My experance tell me that the tears are on the inside, at the tightes fold
and with time heat (why is that fronts fail first)...
I have two airbagers, the ar, and a Range Rover, both failed the front spring first. With the damage on the inside...
I'm just glad that the shocks seem to be holding up.
