Default allroad problems in snow

Does anyone else have the experience of road slush and sand packing in the wheel rim and causing the wheels to unbalance? We have this problem every time we're in more than an inch of snow. The dealer suggests rinsing the rims at a car wash, but we are frequently out of range of such services, and need to bump and bounce along the road for an hour or more. This is a bit unnerving when the roads are icy/slushy. On some trips we are compelled to search out car washes in two or threetowns over a 300 km. distance.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has found a satisfactory solution to this problem.

Which wheels do you have?
Double spoke or single spoke?

Default This is a chronic problem...

...Some people have reported it in the standard (single-spoke) wheels, but just about everyone has this problem with the two-piece ones.

It seems to be worst when you drive the car in snow (mud does this, too) and then let it sit. The snow packed in there melts and slides down to the bottom and re-freezes, causing the imbalance.

I deal with this by knocking as much of the packed snow out of there as I can (I use a long-handled window scraper that fits between the spokes) before it melts. Heated garages are also useful.

There's just something about the design of the wheels and hubs (that plastic protector in there seems to be part of the problem) that causes this. It's a very big PITA.

Good reason for someone to make ugly but efficient steel wheels for the allroad.

As HPH says, this is a chronic problem (along with Shi**y wipers). I have the standard wheels and it happens every time you go through accumulated snow.

Default This, actually, is probably the answer...

...because I sure never had this problem with any other Audis I've had.

I wonder, though, if there isn't more to it, like the hub/brake/etc. design that's in there.

Has anyone else with 3rd party wheels had this problem? Are there other wheels (other Ronals, maybe) that do this? Grump grump grump.

Some wax on the inner surface of the wheels can at least alleviate the conditon, slightly...

Drove thru 10" of snow with standard wheels without any problems.
