ar 2.7 vs. 4.2
does anyone know the performance difference between an Allroad with a 2.7 vs the 4.2 engines? And is it worth waiting for a 2004 with a 4.2 engine or is it a better deal to pick up a 2003 near invoice now? Also is the 4.2 a more durable engine? Does it have a longer life span, since no turbo? Any thoughts on this?

It would probably come down to test driving both and pick the one you like best.
Although I never test drove a 4.2 anything, I went with a 2.7T as my dealer was cutting deals on them. I am totally happy with my 2.7T as it is an upgrade from my old 2.8 A4.
I don't plan on towing, which it seems the 4.2 would have the biggest advantage. The 4.2 probably works better with the Tip as well, i.e. no turbo lag.
Although the lag in my 2.7T Tip isn't that bad to me. Feels like a similar lag my 2.8 manual had in the low RPM range.
Hope this info helps.

I've driven both engines. The 2.7T is faster and peppier. The 4.2 is more powerful.
Pulling a boat or toting heavy loads? You want the 4.2. Need top-notch acceleration? You want the 2.7T.
My observations are based on A6s with the two different engines.

That's odd... were both cars tiptronic?
There power curve of the 4.2 doesn't suggest that it would offer less accelleration than the 2.7t. Maximum accelleration requires maximum power... =)
The new 4.2 weighs the same as the current 2.7t - even more compelling evidence of better accelleration from the 4.2, given equivalent transmissions.

Longevity - a non forced induction engine, 4.2, is less stressed and will probably live longer!
...then again, a well designed, well maintained turbocharged engine will probably live to a ripe old age also, but not as long as a non-turbo, IMHO.
Non Turbo engine = bigger, less stressed, less efficient
Turbo engine = smaller, more stressed, more efficient
