Audi iPod Integration - Icelink from Clair vs. Neo Ion
Part No.: 8E0-051-444
Sale Price: $ 153.45 (orders only, on B/O)
Is this what is required for a 2002 (Symphony II)? I was leaning toward the Neo Ion when the price difference was only $30. At $60 I might be willing to wait for the Audi Icelink to come off backorder.
Does anyone have any experience with the Audi Icelink? I've read a number of reviews and comparisons, some seem to be old. Does the Icelink allow for use of the iPod controls? Does the Icelink still replace the iPod interface with it's own? The Neo seems cleaner, but the $ gap is getting pretty wide. The only drawbacks I have found with the Neo are the HU display and no dock (which doesn't bother me).

I have the Neo Ion
I just got it for Christmas and had it installed. The guy put in a "dock" of sorts which is a metal bracket that he put velcro on to hold the Nano. The dock is mounted to the right side of the stereo and comes out through the small crack between the stereo and the right side of the center console and is angled towards the driver for easy viewing which is nice. But the cable comes out through the same crack, which I dont really like, but it works.
The Ion does allow for control through the steering wheel, but you might want to see the ipod versus having it hidden so you can see what's playing, choose playlists etc since the stereo doesn't display that information.
I'll try to get pics if your interested.

I have the icelink installed in my 03. Pics on my website. It is a 10 minute self install but you will need the special radio removal keys. My dealer lent me a set.
The only issue with icelink is the ipod software. The screen font is way to small to read from any distance. I simply use the standard interface anyway. You can still move through songs with the steering wheel controls.

Icelink is bought direct from www.Dension.com
That is how I bought mine. Plug and play....even a caveman could do it. I went to Best Buy and gave a kid a couple of $$ to pul out my radio... drove home and did in 10 minutes.
I used the Kuda phone mount...E-bay... to hold the Pod mount. This way it is in sight so I can see the play list.
If you have plans to do Satellite, and nav. Think carefully about what you want as there are limits and added parts for that future work.

Re: Audi iPod Integration - Icelink from Clair vs. Neo Ion
I just installed my iceLink Plus yesterday. I bought it from enfigcarstereo.com where it was on sale and the radio removal tools from Clair (you will need four). It is literally plug in and play and it works great. It took about 30 minutes to install - the biggest problem was getting the battery terminals disconnected. I did not have to re-enter the radio code, but it is wise to have them just in case (included with the radio instruction manual). The Audi version as I understand it requires you to pull out some pins from the wire harnesses (which requires a special tool) and is limited in features. There are some earlier posting on Audworld that detail this.
I do not have a mount for the iPod (on back order from ProClip), so I just taped over the connector and tucked it behind the center concole until I am ready for it.

Icelink Connector - Cradle/cable to Icelink module PS/2?
Does anyone think it might be possible to have two connectors to the Icelink through a PS/2 'Y' cable or switch box? Then you could put a cradle on the dash and a cable in the armrest or rear ashtray for the kids and toggle.

Option #3. PodFreq

I know this is just an FM transmitter, but it's by far the best I have come across, and I have tried the Belkins and iTrips already. This PodFreq is a hardcore transmitter which hardly shows any static or interference even on strong signal stations. It comes with a car charger and can be synced through the plugs on the side.
I know it doesn't allow for steering wheel controls, but it does allow for very simple car transfer.
Just another possibility.
And by the way, it fits perfectly in the dash cup holder!
