Just two 10 minute stops for fuel, coffee, and facilities. Ahh the beauty of driving alone. If my wife was with me, we'd have been stopping every 2 hours for a break. Helps to have a couple of rabbits who had no problem running the front door at "brisk" speeds too.
Can't think of a nicer road car than the allroad. Even on the Dunlop M3 snows, rock steady at any speed. And the new XM install certainly helped pass the time too.

....after driving from San Francisco to Seattle recently...I can think of a better road car...
My 1998 BMW 540i 6-speed. Unfortunately, the Allroad doesn't compare for pure long distance driving comfort, poise, speed, and quiet.
The 540i is quite a bit quieter than the Allroad....it revs lower (4.4 liter V8 and tall 6th gear.) and the factory sport seats are to die for and are a lot more adjustable than the stock Allroad seats.
The Allroad is a good road trip car. The E39 540i6 is a GREAT road trip car.

There is snow sometimes along the California-Oregon border area....Grant's Pass, etc
But it was clear sailing (except for some rain in California and north Oregon) this time.

But what if it snowed? I found my old 540 to be less comfortable than the allroad...
for a family with luggage. My wife calls the allroad the "allweather cacoon." Poised under all conditions.
Agree about the revs though. But 20.3 mpg isn't hateful for turning a constant 3400-3500. Wish I could drop 5th gear by 300 rpms. Oh well, nothing's perfect.

2nd. Only real snow areas are going over Siskiyou. Both CA and OR DOT have websites w/cameras
to show you road conditions. It will be cold, and a great chance there will be constant rain, though.

Did you have an E34 or E39 540?
Agreed though. In snow, the 540 wouldn't be as good as the Allroad. Although traction control in the 540 and some decent winter tires it wouldn't be useless.

E34.
Have had 5-series in the family since '75. Great cars, but different than an Audi. I had a '75 530i. '83 528e (horrible car), and the 540. My father has had 9 5-series including his current 5 which has close to 100K miles.
