I'm seeing New Mexico State Patrol cars with what looks sort of like a football helmet sitting on the trunk lid. Because we're a few decades behind the rest of the country, I figure maybe someone knows what this is. A GPS or radio antenna of some kind? A new fancy scanning radar (this is the on-topic possibility)? What?

GPS would be a small, unobtrusive disk on the trunk lid. Hardwire radar guns are about the size of half a pringles can with a remote display, one gun in front, one out back- or at least the big 3 suppliers models look like that.

Seeing as NM has a lot of sparsely populated areas with little RF infrastructure, satellite is the most probable explanation. Infosat is the holding company for the old Iridium network, among other things.
