Cam tensioner help/advice
I recently had my head gasket replaced. Since then, there has been a slight oil burning smell. This work was done at a local shop. I decided to take the car to the dealer to investigate further. Their findings were the head gasket needs to be replaced as well as the cam tensioners.
I know NOTHING about either of these repairs on a technical level. What I am being told is that it's 'possible' that there was just excessive oil leaked/left from the gasket repair burning off. Or, I need to replace the cam tensioners for about $1,500.00.
For better or worse I sprayed off the engine with some degreaser and I no longer smell any burning oil.
How do you really know if the tensioners need to be replaced?
Car is a 2004 6 speed AR with 77,000 miles.
thanks

With only 77k miles it is not the tensioners and a head gasket doesn't give you oil smells. Sounds more like valve cover gaskets and/or cam tensioner seals/plugs. Any of these leaking will let oil leak onto the exhaust and give you a oil burning smell.
