Default Car wont start, VAG wont communicate with ECU

2001 Tip

Just driving along the highway, as I exit and stop at the light the oil warning light flashes on the display and the car stalls. The cluster lights up like a Christmas tree.

The battery is good, the starter cranks.
I check the oil, plenty.
VAG it and I cant connect to the engine to get error codes. However, I can connect to the tranny. I check the fuse for the ECU (#34) and it's good.

When the car stalled and wont start, I checked the ECU and it was VERY hot. Still touchable, but very like. Is that normal? Is it even possible to fry the ECU?

Any clues? TIA

Default You may have a cold soldering point in your ECU; had that happen after hitting a hole on the highway

If your car is chipped with GIAC or anything else that is soldered in place then have the contacts re-soldered.
I had the exact same symptoms and the cause was a cold contact on the IC.

My ECU went. Exact same scenario, except it was in my garage. No CEL.

Default Yes, it is chipped. I did hit a few hard bumps and the ECU wasn't secure.

The metal strap that goes over the ECU wasn't on. I was planning on swapping it out with a OEM one so I didn't bother with putting it back.

Yes, otherwise it couldn't be soldered in, if you DIY then be careful; short head cycles on IC's

Default Walking 15 blocks to bring my ECU home now, will report back once I open it up

NO, I don't plan to DIY. I don't trust myself with that stuff, too fragile.

Default ECU is home. YOU'RE RIGHT! Thanks Rally_nutcase!

The chip was loose. I opened the ECU and one side of the chip wasn't fully seated on the socket. Too bad I brought it home already or else I could have drove the car home.
