Default coded keys and little plastic not coded key?

Some time ago I saw a story on 60min or 20/20 about people stealing a car with a coded key system like we have. Pretty much the trick was to order a replacement key from a dealer using a VIN code. They are not supposed to do this but I guess it happens. (also see: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4265482/)
Now the question. When I don't want to take the key fob I use the little plastic key to lock and also start the car. I doubt that the little plastic key has the coding chip in it (or am I wrong?). Do you guys know how this would work with the plastic key, is the car still protected with the coding? Thanks.

I thought the plastic key was just to open the doors for when you locked your keys inside

Default answer from A6 board is yes for coding

Well the answer is that it is coded too, I might find out how they found out but they are going to kill me...

Default I think you have the answer

Combined with the A6 board answer and your X-ray(?) I think the answer is that the plastic key is coded too, thanks!
