<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/85373/dscf0319_medium.jpg"></center><p>mostly for the search engine, for other people interested.
I posted yesterday about the possibility of needing chains - i decided to try for myself, as there wasn't much info available. I installed them and took a quick spin around the block (snow on the ground) and they worked fine. Didn't rub on anything. They look like they *may* scratch the wheels a bit, however that isn't really my concern, as i'll be looking at a new wheel and tire package shortly (and using the OEM twin spokes for winter tires).
hope this helps.

i have never NEEDED chains .... however there are times ....
when CA REQUIRES AWD+snow tires+ chains (CA-R3 road conditions)
i personally have never been in a situation needing them, but as i'm often in an area the sometimes requires it, i'd like to be prepared.

idea -- take the face plate off the twin spokes when using chains
accomplish 2 things:
1. no scratches on the pretty side
2. no snow packing between the twin layers
thankyouverymuch

Where I come from, we call those "cables". Real snow chains need more clearance in wheel well.

Also, I think Audi says not to mess with taking apart the twin spokes. I have had snow pack the twin spokes to the point where I had to take my windshield snow scraper tool and punch the snow out of the wheels. It had made the wheels out of balance so much that it like a flat tire when over 45 mph.
I live in Northern Virginia and haven't bought chains or snow tires for the allroad. I've had good luck with cables in my previous Volvo when the clearance in the wheel well wouldn't allow big clunky chains.

Took my faces off last weekend to refinish them. Need a good quality 8mm 12 point star
to get the bolts off. They are Loctited in place and will take some effort but be careful not to strip them out. I got an 8mm 1/2" drive which I put on my impact gun and they all came off with little fuss. The faces got scratched over the years, so I'll repaint with Wurth silver and Wurth blending clear. Won't be a perfect match to factory finish but all 4 will look alike.
