Default No mystery, any engine with MLM gaskets (Multi Layer Metal) are prone to slow coolant loss.

A careful retorque will often cure the problem if it's not too bad. Toyota, Ford, VW Audi, and GM all suffer from this in various engines. Probably other manufacturers as well as they don't make gaskets, but buy them from common suppliers. Torque to yield bolts, the current darling of engine designers also contribute to the problem.

My mysterious coolant leak required a new engine.

Default Thanks. So if the re-torque isn't successful, is the next step to replace the head gaskets?

Right about now I'm Mr. doom-and-gloom since nothing seems to be working.

Did they ever determine what the problem was?

Before that, Rear main seal. then HG, then it could be a cracked head or block.

Default FYI : Re-torquing stock head bolts is risky

ARP head-bolts are the only ones I know that can ne safely re-torqued

2nd. If you are down that far, you may as well just replace HGs and use new bolts.

Default Yes you may want to replace the headbolts one at a time as the stock ones are torque to yeild and

once torqued are stretched beyond reuse. Evry instance of this problem I have seen has been preceded by mild to heavy overheating. Even slight overheating causes the bolts to loose clamp and the heads to move around.

Default Oh and stop leaks are a temporary and in the end costly half step.

They tend to clog heater cores and smaller passages in the radiator, causing some lose of cooling and heating. And under the worst senerio over heating.
