Default CV joint question

Two weeks ago I did my LF air spring. While replacing it I noticed that the CV joint boot was torn, probably beacsue of the stress of the suspension settling too low.

I replaced the boot yesterday; there was still grease inside and I didn't feel the need to replace the joint itself. But, I noticed some heat discoloration on the joint and the Bentley manual says that this is a sign of failure. The bearings and traces looked good and there is no clicking. Do I have a time bomb about to go off, or am I good?

Default No, the heat discoloration is left over from manufacturing and nothing

to do with your boot failure.

Default I have had both CV boots replaced

The dealership told me that Audi redesigned the boots to have more "folds" for better flexibility / less stress on the joints.

Default Left Front Air Suspension?

How difficult was the swap out? Did you have a lift? I need to have mine done and going to order bag from Carson at Riverside Audi tomorrow. Have to do both CV joints while in there too. Any advice or experience would be worth a couple cases of beer.

Default ANY advice?

PB blaster on the pinch bolt and drive shaft bolts - mine came out pretty easily but if you're somewhere that salts the roads YMMV.

A brass hammer and a punch helps get the upper controls out. I used a modified chisel to help open the slot a bit for the rear upper control arm.

Raxles sells full axles for ~$200, NAPA sells them for ~$75 but they were unavailable - I just bought a CV boot kit from ECS Tuning.

There was a good how to about 10 days ago on this forum for the suspension. There's a couple of tech articles in the tech section. A Bentley manual helps for torque settings.

make sure you have the right triple square socket for the drive axle and long extensions for your ratchets.

The axle nut that came off was a 17mm allen - the new one was a 22mm nut. make sure you have both. The allen needs to be a socket because you'll be using a nasty breaker bar to get it off.

I re-used my pinch bolt but I think it might be a good idea to replace it.

One of those new ratcheting socket sets where the socket goes into a hole in the ratcheting handle are good so that you can feed the allen wrench into the top of the shock, while fastening the upper shock mount nut.

Have help.
