Default Dakar '03 ->

The Speed Channel, bless its heart, is showing parts of the Dakar Rally (which appears to be from Marseille to some godforsaken place by the Red Sea this year).

Now I know what to do with my allroad when I get bored with the back roads we have here in the Rockies. Gotta figure out how to make it go fast at level 4, though.

Either that or get a bike and learn to eat sand.

Default The Dakar rules...

The privaters are crazy, especially the bikes. I can understand such an epic wit factory support, but by your lonesome. WOW!

Default Ya, the Canadian KTM guy actually finished on his own! I can't believe that, and on his first try I

think.

Many, many factory sponsored teams don't even make it to the finish. This year's path seemed really rocky, but I've only caught the past couple of years.

Default Before watching the entire speed coverage this year...

I never thought that I would ever want to visit Africa, though some of those desert shots were amazing. Not to mention the dunes!!! I wonder why the KTMs seem to dominate?

Default Seriously dangerous racing ...

It's bad enough when accidents take the lives of drivers and co-drivers, as they did again this year, but any race which has to be re-routed because of land mines is only for the boldest of the bold. Ya think Stewart or Gordon would want to dodge armed dissident groups?

Default Agreed....

Only making left hand turns is a far cry from running a road book or GPS throught the desert of Africa!!

Default Ya, I don't know why they are so dominant. Maybe they have great factory support for pre-race

preparation. I don't even know what type of street/motocross bikes they make for the public.

Default KTM doesn't always dominate. A couple of years ago it was BMW 1st/2nd/4th...

(We're talking bikes, right? =)

The BMW's typically have the reliability to go the distance, and the KTMs have the lighter weight and maneuverability needed to cross the more difficult sections.

Last year BMW's John Deacon crashed out of 1st place, and KTM won. This year, BMW made a relatively poor showing, compared to years passed, and KTM capitalized. But, BMW does have a consumer GS named after the race... a testament to their commitment to it!
