Dealership just called...I'm FREAKING OUT here!

Dealership just called...I'm FREAKING OUT here!
My car only has 4,000 miles on it!
The "whirr" sound I have been hearing upon hard acceleration (in the mid-gears) which I thought was something minor behind the glove compartment is apparently not minor at all.
The dealership "thinks" my passenger side turbo is bad, but AoA won't let them replace just one turbo so they have to replace BOTH. I had no idea how much that entailed...until a few minutes ago. The whole engine and transmission have to come out and be put back in???? WHAT? Like it will ever be put back together as well as it came from the factory!
Somebody please tell me everything is going to be ok. I feel like a parent who took his kid in for a sniffle and found out he needs a complete heart-lung transplant! Things are never going to be the same again, are they?
Am I over-reacting?

Ahhh, no big deal...happens all the time to the S4 guys and occasionally to the 2.7T A6 guys...
no sweat...
Apparently it wasn't so great "from the factory", so don't worry about that...just be glad you didn't chip it...or the $7-8k bill would've been yours!
Good luck...

Re: Dealership just called...I'm FREAKING OUT here!
2002 Tip here,12000 miles. I have what I'd describe as a whistle type whirr (if I know what a whirr is) on hard acceleration. Brought it to dealer twice. They said it was normal. How long have you heard your whirr? How loud is it? Do I need to be freaking out?
PS-Best of luck!

Re: Your "whirr"
I have had my "whirr" since I bought the car new. I noticed it the second day.
Someone on here a while back best described the sound as like running your thumb nail across the teeth of a comb. And it only happens on acceleration.
It is not normal.
Turbo whines? Normal
A brake groan under certain conditions very infrequently? Normal
but a consistent "whirr" upon hard acceleration is not normal. I don't know if you need ot be freaking out, but it is definitely something you should have checked out. Has a tech driven your car to hear the "whirr"?

Aaron -- I'm the comb's teeth guy, and...
...I've not had it happen since my car was new (despite significant hard acceleration, uphill, loaded, every now and then).
It worried me at the time, but I became persuaded it was something mechanical, external to the turbos (like a heat shield rattle). And it went away and hasn't returned.
That said, your experience is one of those reasons that the Audi 50K/3yr warranty is a good thing, along with extended warranties.
And they're doing the right thing -- the turbos get replaced simultaneously per Audi manual specs (this is a consideration of the extended warranty game). Further, it's necessary to pull the engine to do the replacement. Better this should happen now than at 50,004 miles.

Wow that's a second one in just under three years...
If it's true you'll be the second one I can remember having bad turbos in almost three years. Anything mass produced is sure to have the occasional dud.
