Default does one try and avoid using spacers if possible?

So I'm looking at some RS4 replica wheels 17x7.5 offset is 35 from craigslist for my winter tires...my twin spoke OEMs just pack up with snow, very irritating....anyhoo I assume I'll need some 10mm or 15 mm spacers and need new lug nuts. (have I got that right?) I've got stock brakes. Are there any downsides to using spacers? I'd think you'd try and avoid them if possible by getting the correct wheel in the first place. And can the brain trust suggest any sources for spacers (in Canada if possible)?

Thanks all

Default Safest: run the smallest bolt on H+R *adaptor*.

Spacers that require longer studs are not that safe above a few mm. Adaptors themselves bolt to the hub, and have their own threads that the wheel then bolts to.

Google H+R adaptor for more details.
