Default Downpipe Installation...

Heya all,

Has anybody taken this on? How bad is it (on a tip)?

Main reason for doing this is the large amount of heat I feel in my footwell (particularly when driving with the windows open on a cool day).

As most of you know, the 2.7T's downpipes run right along the firewall and include a pre-cat right at the turbo (and firewall). I have a set DP's which have been "Piggied", and ceramic coated. Might be an overkill, but even thinking of adding exhaust wrap to them too...

I thought about taking on this project myself, but hear it is a real PITA.

If it's better to pay someone, how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks!
Gavin

I have no heat on the feet from this area even after a 500 miles run; are you missing a heat shield?

Default Ditto.

I hear Piggie Pipes are the way to go. Care to elaborate on how/who did them?

Default Heat shields are in place...

As evidence, one of them was rattling and had it adjusted last week...

I dont know what it is. maybe I am missing a plug or something in the firewall.... I seem to notice it while driving with a window(s) open. If the AC is on and windows closed I don't notice it...

Next time your driving, touch your steering column and other parts of your dash below. Do they get warm? How about your key when you take it out of the ignition, is it warm/hot?

Thanks for any advice/info!

Regards,
Gavin

Default Piggy himself...

Bought a spare set from a scrap yard and had them shipped to Piggy to tweak. Came off an AR with 0 miles... Delivery truck went under an overpass that wasn't high enough...

Default Can you email me his info? I have been trying to track him down for a while.

I would pay someone to do it...I think it requires removing the engine, no?

Default No, no engine removal...

Here is a HOW-TO Piggy wrote:

It is my understanding it is a bit different on a TIP... Appearantly you have to drop the sub-frame (but not on a 6spd)...

I think I will end up paying someone... Sucks to have to fork out another $600+ to resolve a heat problem. Granted I will have a slight performance gain...

Default any cost info?

I've been thinking DP's but the $1200+ from a tuner is a little costly.

As far as install - I'm wondering the same myself. Don't know if I'm capable of doing it or have trust in any of the local shops...

Default Not sure what his standard price is...

But it is a fraction (maybe around a 1/3 of a high end DP) of what buying aftermarket DPs are and supposedly have nearly identical performance.

He is in Michigan so you will be without a car for a few days while your DPs are being shipped, modified, and shipped back... He may have a spare set he can sell/trade you. Or you can buy your own from a scrap yard (like I did).

I can't speak from experience (yet), but I hear the changes make a big diff...

Precats are RIGHT off the turbos. I am sure all this heat is shortening the life of the turbos. I suspect these tweaks will greatly reduce the heat there...

Gavin
