Growl
I've got a growling noise happening every few days. It sounds like it's at the flywheel. Performance isn't affected and it stops when the car is restarted. 2.7t with AT. Happens when manually downshifting going downhill

any way you can get an audio clip of the sound? is it something rattling?

It's so intermittent that I never know when it will happen. A mechanic looked at it today and saw fluid splashed around the tailshaft seal so we're going to do that tomorrow. Today we let the old ATF out and refilled it with new. It was dirty and had some metal flake in it. So after the seal I'm going to get a transmission refill kit. No noise and no shifting problems now but I'm not counting on that to continue. He said no bolts were loose. If it persists I'll put my phone on record to catch it.

More clues
So I'm getting more info from my car and there is no CEL or codes on the reader. I'm getting a noise that sounds like a pump cycling prior to the loud growling noise. When this last occurred it was cruising at 60 mph on a flat road. When I was coming to a red light the noise stopped when the trans kicked out to neutral and did not do it again on that trip and hasn't since. It's the first time its quit on its own
I think the filter is doing nothing at this point as I think it's never been changed. I think debris is in the pump and possibly the torque converter and I'm hoping a complete drain, fill and filter change will help. I'm waiting for 12 liters of the febi G 052 162 fluid and a new filter and pan gasket. Driving minimally and calmly until it's done. I'm thinking I can save it but I might have to do the filter and fluid a couple times. Btw: CARID has the febi Esso 71141 equivalent for $9.52 liter. Does anyone think I'm on the right track here? |

So it turns out to be the clutch in the ac compressor. Fortunate to have thought it was trans because that trans service was way needed! Found used ac compressor for $60.
