Has anyone actually tried doing a 3rd row seat in a 2001 that wasn't OEM from factory?
I've been reading the archieves for a good hour, and there is a lot of talk about it. But it seems nobody has ever tried it. Basically the issues are the floor pan, and C-pillar belts. The seats come around used every now and then on eBay so that's the easy part. I'm wodering if anyone here has put the third row seats in a 2001 allroad that did not come equipped with it. I've read that the allroad seats will fit in the Avants but will the Avants fit in the allroad? Again, I'm talking 2001. The C-pillar issue seems easy enough (for me), buy the belts and new C-pillar trim, and bolt them in. But the floor pan is what I need to find out about. I can't imagine that Audi sent different cars down the line, i.e., allroads that would get 3rd row and those that wouldn't. So is the floor pan in the 2001 allroad able to be swapped out for one with the recessed pan? I'm willing do dump $1,000 into it if necessary. Please no posts about being crazy to put my kids back there. It's only to be used on occasion when we have a couple extra people to haul around...rarely.

To my knowledge nobody on this board has ever tried and I have been here since day 1
It's not that it is impossible, just impractical. It just never made sense for someone to move forward after the situation was analyzed. Since it sounds like you are both brave and determined you will have to forge some new ground. If you do it make sure you document the procedure.
On the other hand, you could just take the time you would invest and use it to just locate a used allroad with a seat if possible. Or take the $1000 and offer someone $1000 over book value for their car and convince them to sell.

Nope, nada...not worth the effort.....for safety sake
Hey..I have an A6 Avant...and I've considered it myself (seeing how I have one kid and probably two more enroute)..everytime I see one sell on ebay for $400. These seats have specific bolt points in the trunk area that are created at the factory... I think that only 15% of avants were assembled with the third row option. Plus, the trunk area is completely different. I guess you could try and make it fit...but first, you'll need to remove the gas tank, part of the rear end etc to install the three holes in the trunk area...sounds like a bit of work...in my opinion.
If you have any kids you'll understand. Would you strap your 18 month old son into the front passenger seat (without his car seat)...hopefully not? Because in the event of an accident (God willing) or a minor fender-bender..you could risk permanently injuring your kid. Is having an aftermarket third-row seat worth that price? Only you can answer that question.
Good luck on your research.

Check those C-pillars first -
I'd pull the C-pillar trim piece off and see if the mounting points for the seat belts exist - if they don't, you're looking at a real problem.
VAG holds the auto industry world record for most vehicles off the same platform for this family of vehicles (Golf, Jetta, Passat, A4, A6, maybe A3, and I think a Seat/Skoda flavor or two), so it's not at all inconceivable to me that they would have different body-in-white configurations for the 3rd seat models. Remember, you can get cars with or without a sunroof - and that decision has to be made very early in body assembly.
I used to spend quite a bit of time in auto assembly plants...

No. But I have some nice factory pictures (A6 Avant).
Seems quite complex to me ...
