Default Hello & 2 newbie ?s

Just picked up an '01 w/ 45K (fully loaded)from local dealer last week, came with the 2 year warrenty. All I can say is WOW! I had no idea that such a practical car could be this much fun. I have got 2 issues going on:
1) Strong burnt smell coming from under the car if it has been revved harder.
2) Clunking noise from front left suspension when it travels at low speeds- Seems to be consistent with a control arm problem.

This seems like a great list!

Default you have a burned clutch.. IMHO..

Its possibly slipping. 'Been there..done that.'

Back to the dealer ASAP.. watch you tach stay in 3rd at 2500 RPM and floor it.. does the tach move more than the speed builds?
In park..parking brake on.. go to 1st and 1500 RPM..does the car stall?

Default When you say "revved harder," do you mean revved in neutral standing still, or

with the clutch engaged and the car in motion? If in motion, then it's a bad clutch as Paul suggested, if when standing still, then...i don't know, might be a number of things.
A lot of people have the second problem, it looks like the dealers have a hard time diagnosing that issue for some reason (laziness and incompetence most probably).

Default burnt smell is oil leak

check the transmission output seal for signs of a leak. The oil goes right onto the secondary cats and burns up.

Thanks for the replys.

I tried the hand brake @ 1500 rpm- no stall,
3rd @ 2500 rpm the tach moves slightly faster than the speedo, but seems close to the speed of the car.

Where is the trans output seal, is it the one for the prop shaft to the rear axle?

I can't see any oil leak, but there is so much darn covering on the underbody.

***Also forgot to ask: is the shifter moving forward (pedle up) and back (pedle down) along with pressing down the throtle normal? And is the throtle an actual cable or is it drive by wire?

-Thanks again

-Ryan

Default Drive by wire... and shifter movement is normal.

I think you proved that you have a slipping clutch. To the dealer you go and DO NOT PAY FOR A NEW ONE... :-)

Any suggestions on how to get the dealer to pick up the tab on this b/c clutches aren't covered under the pre-owned warrenty.

Default Clutch is covered under 5k/5 year maintenenace program..

No matter if you are first or second or third owner.

If the car Is Audi CPO and you just bought it and you have less the say 1K miles since you bought it the dealer should make good on it. Becaus they did not check it out. If it is not CPO and just an aftermarket warranty then you may be SOL...

Talk to the OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP.... not sales..not service. its his business...its his reputation.

Yep its CPO thanks for the help, I will stop by the dealership in the morning on my way to work. I will post follow-ups regarding my two problems and how they were dealt with.
