Help! 2001 Allroad Ignition problem
 

So today when I went to start my car the ignition seemed to be locked, like when you just need to jiggle the steering wheel to turn the key. I jiggled the steering wheel and there was still some resistance, but I tried to turn the key anyway and I think I broke something inside the ignition? Is this even possible?I heard a snapping noise and the key will turn to starting postilion, all electrical items, radio, windows, dash lights, etc work but the car makes no attempt to start. What did I break? I haven't even owned this car 2 months. . . . :(

It sounds like the lock tumbler may be broken. If so, the ignition key switch will need to be replaced.

How do I go about checking to see if that is the issue, and more importantly how do I keep it from happening again once I replace it?

Got the repair manual out, first step is to remove the airbag. Beyond our capabilities, to the import mechanic it goes. :(

As you mentioned, a qualified Audi tech should be able to fix or replace it. My 02 allroad has never had an issue with the ignition switch so an OEM replacement should last a loooong time.

I would not be afraid of removing an airbag...just careful. Make sure you disconnect the battery first, and keep you face clear as you unbolt it. Once you remove the bag, carefully unplug and put it in a safe place. Do not connect the battery until the airbag is back in place.

Should be a pretty easy repair once you get to the part. I wouldn't think you need to remove the air bag.
