Sorry I couldn't resist the title but I'm having an intermittent issue with the locking mechanism on my 2002 Allroad 2.7T. The locks sometimes won't unlock when I press the interior lock release button and I'm forced to use the remote unlock button to exit the car. The remote seems to work most of the time to lock/unlock the doors but sometimes it takes several attempts. I'm not sure if this is related but the previous owner apparently had the auto lock feature disabled. Is there a sensor or something that needs to be checked/cleaned or would reprogramming with VAGCOM solve the issue?

microswitch issue it sounds like
mine does the same thing every so often and i know i have 2 dead microswitches in the door latches

If you pull the interior door handle twice, doesn't that unlock it?
