Default two: an early 2001 and late 2002 ...

I must say they made quite a few nice improvements in the '02 - sport shift mode (tiptronic), compass in mirror, in-dash 6CD changer, A/C filter, much improved steering, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting. The controls on the steering wheel are much better too (our 2001 controls seemed to only work after repeatedly pushing buttons, e.g. the audio volume controls). Oh and it's nice to see track time in the large display for the audio system.

Downgrades include a dull aluminum interior trim (where it was chrome in the 2001), a leather shifter (wood was standard in the 2001) and the console around the stereo doesn't wrap in wood (it's plastic end-to-end). Not sure when they changed to the leather shifter, since the catalog for the 2002 model year shows a wood shifter. Oh, and the rear-view auto-dimming mirrors have changed to a wierd greenish-blue tint when dimmed (the '01 was just darker gray, maybe with a hint of dark blue).

I could have gotten an '03 but didn't want to lose tip shifting from the steering wheel.

Default My 2001 was replaced with a 2002 by Audi

My 2001 was pretty much a nightmare, so it was replaced in sept. 2002 with a late build 2002 model. The 2001 had 16K miles on it and the 2002 just turned 5K. So far, the 2002 has been flawless.

Default Differences I have noticed between 2001 and 2002

latch system
no trunk pass through(maybe because of the 3rd seat)
instrument needles light up at all times
no off button on the climate control
new **** for the lights
different turn signal indicators on side of the car
pre-set scroll buttons on the steering wheel.

I don't know what you mean about the wood around the stereo, I haven't noticed a difference. I also personally like the brushed alluminum trim better than the chrome. Mine didn't come with the wood shifter but I had Audi swap the one from my 2001 to my 2002. I agree, the steering is much improved and feels more like my 2001 with the 605 relay removed.
