How much is the factory hitch, and is there an alternative for our allroads? Also...
does anyone make a ready-to-paint car top carrier, or would my shop have to prep a finished box prior to painting?

Clairparts.com for the hitch.. e-mail to barry
tell him you are part of Audiworld. He may give you 5% of thier price which is lower than the normal dealer price. It is the ONLY oem hitch. Any other hitch bolts to the spare tire well and is not as struturally sound.

There is no good alternative to the factory hitch; the others out there are only good for 1000#...
...to 2000# and even then they may not hold up well or work with the Parktrionic. OEM is by far the best way to go.
All cartop carriers that I've see come prepainted, one way or another, so prep work would be needed for refinishing.
