Aaron,
Can you describe the whirring sound. I reported a sound from the same area as 'cricket-like' and the dealer could not recreate it. It is intermittent but occurs under acceleration.
Thanks,
Emilio

Bosch? It says KK&K on the turbo in your photo.
As in Aktiengesellschaft Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch. They've been making turbos for ages. Who is Audi going to switch to? Other major ones I can think of are Garrett, Mitsubishi, and IHI.

http://www.agkkk.de/english/index.htm</a

Yapp! That's the Daddy!
That is exactly the sound. It is "chirpy," intermittent, whirring (as in a fan) and only occurs under pretty dcent acceleration. Tell your dealer to listen for something similar to a thumbnail being run down the teeth of a comb.
Apparently it is completely harmless, but I found it annoying. Some people find that it goes away early on (as in the first 1k miles). In 3500 miles, my glove compartment cricket did not go away but settled in for the longhaul. The tech mentioned to me yesterday that it is not an uncommon defect in these turbos and will not cause a breakdown. But under the boost test, the passenger's side turbo was not delivering enough boost, and the driver's side was thus over-compensating. Even if I could have learned to live with the cricket, I could not live with the poor turbo performance.
If any of this sounds familiar to you, you might tell your dealer to check the Audi Tech-line for a description of the problem, or he can contact the service dept. at my dealership. My guess is they know what an expensive, long, involved and tedious repair this requires and do not want to undertake it.
If you decide to get it repaired (bi-turbo replacement), make sure your dealership has their best guy on it. This is no coil-pack replacement. Email me if you wanna know anything else.
