Don't you need the set up from an Avant?

RMcQ 02-07-2005 11:45 AM

This is a concern, but perhaps not a deal breaker?

The sedan and avant do have a different part number for the rear gas shock but all other parts are the same from what i can tell looking at ETKA. I'm sure the Avant has shocks designed for heavier loads but I'm hoping they have the same physical dimensions. Am I out to lunch?

you are losing it. you are crazy

RMcQ 02-07-2005 11:58 AM

Yes I probably am. I figured at 100,000 miles I'll switch over.

Put the allroad on a serious diet, get the handling where I am more comfortable spending the big bucks on other performance upgrades.

Lets face it, I'm going to be doing turbos one way or another before too long. I want a skidmark like setup but I have this nagging feeling that there is little point of putting 435hp into a car that is just too much of a compromise on the handling side.

The tough part is that my 310hp allroad suspension allroad is a really, really nice setup. It's just that if I am going to the next level I'm going all the way.

How much weight do you think I could take out of it by scrapping the air suspension?

paulroad 02-07-2005 01:46 PM

IMHO.. and its an opinion based on nothing...

I would think that there are different mounting points and sizes on the rear of an avant as opposed to the sedan. It will be hard enough to map out the mounting points in the changover from air ride to normal suspension.

But, it is an ambitious idea.

ShowMeData 02-07-2005 03:05 PM

My guess is...

same mounting points and shared control arms. Different shock/strut for increased spring rate to account for the avant being more butt-heavy.

There are factory concerns which make having common mounting points and geometries desirable.

These uncertainties are exactly why I am trying (and suceeded) in 'borrowing' an A6 suspension

I can do some investigating without costing anything.

Stasis talked like this was very do-able

Maybe someday I'll have an allroad with coilovers...

Do you really want to "bastardize" this beauty?

Why not go the opposite way....low rider..;-)
And yes, you are losing it, welcome to the club
