Default A mileage question for the 4.2 crowd?

What kind of mileage are you getting? My 2.7 with tip can just barely get 22 mpg on the highway cruising at 75 mph or so. In town is 15 mpg if I'm lucky. I know that the B6 S4 is getting slammed for poor mileage vs the B5 S4. Is the 4.2 just a thirsty moter.

Default Not managing much better than 13 mpg city / 21 Hwy..

My problem is that I keep transmission in 'S' mode much of the time. When I drop it back to 'D', I see mpg improve by average 3- 4 in city driving. Nevertheless, I do think the engine is quite thirsty - my wife's heavier MB ML500 has almost identical gas mileage

Default 13/21 for me, too

i had my dealer check it out, because the epa rated it at 16/21, but they said that everything checks out fine. i think, like quattro_marin, i am taking a hit in mileage by running it in "S" mode much of the time in the city. kind of disappointing, though; when i got rid of my x5 4.4i, i was hoping to get a little better mileage.

Only the 6 speed (manual) pays the gas guzzler tax, tip doesn't.

Default In general the AWD 4.2 AR , weighs on scale of 4300lb, won't give a decent mileage,but...

By comparison the 4.2 is ok to me on the fuel issue for the following reasons-
1)It takes regular.
2)Put the gear on sport drive, the 4.2 drives like a sport sedan without paying the gas guzzler tax.
3)All the SUVs I drive(drove) have worse MPG than AR 4.2. The Landcruiser got 12, MDX 14.3, ML55 11.5, V8 4Runner 12-13.
4)The 1st E500 AWD wagon wouln'd give you better mileage. Both V8, weigh about same, the E sucks premuim only and 15000k more.
