My experience with the new 2009 A4 Avant
May 2008, my lease is up on my 2004 A4 Avant. At the time I debated what to do, keep it, buy an allroad (2004) or wait for the 2009 A4 Avant. I chose the allroad and I like it very much. This past Wednesday I took it in for servicing, both front air suspension were replaced. On Wednesday, they gave me an A3 S-Line, very nice. Except that Thursday morning, the heater wasn't working and it was -15C. Froze my *** getting to the dealership, and they give me another car, a 2009 A4 Avant. My first reaction was, **** this car is not much bigger than my old A4 Avant. Suffice it to say, that I did not go pick up my allroad on Friday, I kept the A4 Avant for the weekend. And, I really really like it.
The allroad is wider and longer, more spacious. Even though the A4 Avant is AWD, I miss the ground clearance of the allroad (especially after 20 inches of snow this past week). The A4 is very quiet, the 2.0T is a nice engine, the cabin is spacious, the trunk is ok (more design than functional). The interior is stunning, the build quality never ceases to impress me at Audi. The MMI is easy to use, mastered it after 10min. The car as the optional Bang & Olufsen speakers, not only do they look great, they sound fantastic. No comparison between my Bose option on the allroad and the B&O of the A4. My wife is already asking about the A4 Avant, I told her given the economic conditions we should wait.
I do miss my allroad, but I'm sure I will miss the 2009 A4 Avant when I hand back the keys on Monday.
Ideally, it would be great to have both!
Great job Audi, keep up the excellent work.

Now if Audi could figure out how to make a car with a heater and a suspension that works.
That would go a lot toward build quality. After our allroad, my wife has sworn off another Audi/VW product.

Re: My experience with the new 2009 A4 Avant
My wife loves it, both kids have enough room. Yes, it's an alternative to the allroad. The car does sit much lower, so in heavy snowfalls the allroad will be much better. However, on the handling, there is no comparison. Plus, the A4 will be much more reliable.
It's unfortunate that the car I have is an auto A4, the stick is not yet available.
It's going back tomorrow morning.
