Apparently, people have some really odd misconceptions about how spacers function.

I can see your point about the lip being a waste but I was under the impression that the
rounded part on the front of the spacers that sticks out was supposed emulate the hub and fit into the rounded in section of the rim. just as the hub fits the rounded in section on the back of the spacer for it to be considered "hub-centric".(the hub aligns the rim and the lug bolts just hold it fast) I have a set of 8 mm spacers and the way I checked the thickness was with a 8mm wrench : ) (the variation of thickness part I could see causing vibration problems for sure) the lip part is nice for holding the wheel on before you put the lug bolts on.
