Default Oil Leak - timing chain cover question

I have a 2004 4.2 Allroad with 55K miles. I noticed an oil leak a few days ago...the oil almost looks like gear oil with it being so dark. The dealership told me that they believe the timing chain cover will have to be replaced as they think there is a leak in a seal. They said it's a 27 hour job!!! The engine and transmission will have to be removed to complete. Does this sound correct? I don't know much about engines....it just doesn't seem that 5K miles after a car comes out of warranty you should have to take the engine and transmission out. Any thoughts?

Default Unfortunately Audi "Improved" the 4.2 be changing it too a

chain drive , from a timing belt, and at the same time moved it to te rear of the engine to "increase" front engine compartment fit and space. Another idea they copied from ford, when they tried it on their V6's. The auto industry is very incestuous when it comes to very bad ideas. If it really sucks, works poorly and decreases reliability, it a sure thing it will be adopted by everyone. in order to access it, the engine and trans have to be removed, great idea huh.

Default possibly.. but first..

call AoA customer care and explain this to them 100% especially the 27 hours and 5000 miles out of warranty.

Depending on how nice you are, may be sympathetic and help. If they don't find an IDEPENDANT audi repair shop and let them look it over and diagnose the problem. It will save you stress and $$.

Default Re: Oil Leak - timing chain cover question

Crystal ball look into the future:
Warranty expires
Timing chain problems
allroad catches fire or is "stolen"
