Pass the salt

Pass the salt
Greetings from salty Minnesota. It's here, the season of snow and, of course, road salt. Driving home the other night I was stuck in moving traffic blocked in all directions with a salt spreading snowplow twenty-five feet ahead. Yikes. Follow too close and chunks of salt bounce off the car. Drop back and sit in a briny mist. Can't wait to get the car washed to return it to its rightful glossy black. As they say it's a winter wonderland as in I wonder why we don't live somewhere else.

I'd sooner be homeless in CA than have to deal with that..... 8-)

Ahhhh, allroad and the beautiful CA Redwoods! Summer, Spring, Winter, Autumn - always green!
I couldn't drive in the snow even if I was passenger on a snowplow! I'm just a BIG SISSY!
I've been all over the Midwest and LOVE it! (Cedar Point RULES!) But it's the weather that sucks! I can see why it costs 1.5 million dollars for a 2-bedroom house in CA - the weather! Even today it's a chilly 55 degrees but sunny and gorgeous - looking across the bay from Santa Cruz you could see Monterey!
Having to buy a new car every 2 years because it's been eroded by salt, damaged by baseball size hail, swept up in a tornado or carried away in a flood sounds like a huge expense to me.
All I can say is; while I don't envy those who must adapt to such adversity in weather, I am impressed with those who can deal with it year after year.... To you, I take my hat off! 8-)

How does your windshield look after the pelting?
I've seen on other posts that Audi's tend to have a "softer" windshield which may be less resilient to rocks and other objects. Keep us posted if you start having issues with this. Thanks.

Re: Pass the salt
Road salt! what's that!
Definately don't miss the road salt after moving out of MN. Then again, they use Mag Chloride out here which stains the aluminum bits to nice dull finish!

About windshields: before my ar I drove an A6 Avant for 55k and did notice the glass became peppered enough to damage the edges of the wiper blades. I think this is more likely caused by sand that is present pretty much year round. With 17k on the ar there's no sign of pitting, but I did take a rock in the goggles early last summer and that cost about $1500 to replace.

Thanks for the info - in Seattle the DOT uses "sand" but I don't think salt.
The sand/gravel mix beatup the front of our Honda a couple of years ago so this year I going to take it very carefully in the ar. Hanging back and not following too closely, etc. I haven't had a chance to get Stoneguard installed yet.
