Default Pigtail converter box fried

I just got back from my dealer where they told me that Audi tech told them that I was drawing to much amperage and had to convert my trailer to LED's. Aside from the fact that LED's pull about the same amperage has anyone heard of issues concerning the stock wiring and the frying of the converter box? I was told this was quite common about 3 yrs ago.

I also sent an email to Erich Jaeger to inquire about this.

I had the same problem a few years ago. The OEM unit is made by Hopkins manufacturing (link below). I removed the 13 pin plug from the old unit and attached to the harness of the new unit. Never had a problem since and never made any changes to the trailer lighting. I beleive the converter is meant to be short protected. If yours is completey smoked, then this should not be as a result of load. Note that Napa used to carry some of the Hoppy converter products.

http://www.hopkinsmfg.com/etconverters.html</a

Let get this straight, you removed the OEM converter box and wired in the Hopkins converter to the 13 pin plug that slides into the female end that swings down. correct?

Thanks, I had emailed Hopkins but I hadn't heard anything.

Correct. I got the identical Hopkins converter and carefully migrated the 13 pin connector from the wiring on the old converter to the new.
