Default question about new key fob - How does the immobilizer get the code from the key? is it electric?

I fell in the creek yesterday and took my key fob with me. the remote stopped working (I dried it out and tried a new battery) but fortunately, it still starts car.

I got a new key cut, can you tell which is the new one?
<img src="http://madisonminer.com/images/ar/fob/DSC01877.jpg">

the new key would unlock the door if I stuck it in the lock, but that was it. The remote on the new key didn't work and when in the ignition the car will run for about 0.5 second then die.

So, I used the Ross-Tech method to match the remote to the car.. now the new key will lock and unlock the car remotely, sweet. But it still wont start the car!

So, from reading this forum; it seems I need to get the SKC from the dealer to match the immobilizer to the key. please tell me there is another way (2001 ar fwiw)

The crazy thing is that this key will do it ALL!

The bottom(electronics) from the new key , and the top part(blade) from the old key... The above key's remote works, and the car runs...

My question; how the **** does the car know which key is inserted in to the ignition?? especially since the battery and everything electric is from the new key? The key blades looks like they are cut the exact same. wtf?

To put it another way, with the battery and electronics removed, why does only one of these (half)keys, with identical blades let the car run for more that a second??

Default take the bottom of the old and attach it to the new.....

the bottom part has a resistor in it this is read by the ignition switch and accepted for the immobilizer.

Default that doesn't work, car wont start. The only top part that will keep it running is the OLD one

with either bottom.

The NEW top part(blade) will NOT keep it running with either bottom.

Maybe there is a hidden, waterproof, microscopic transmitter hidden in the top part somewhere???

Default My second key (which I have yet to have the immobilizer coded for) will run the car - albeit ...

... with some flashing lights in the cluster

I think my aftermarket tuning disabled the shutdown bits.

Default have your cake and eat it too!

That seems like an unexpected additional benefit, what chip are you using?
