Question for the group...RE: Deal Making on a used allroad (sorry so long)
My dealer has an '02 allroad with Premium, Leather, Heated, Convenience, tip (no sunroof)and 12,000 miles.
The car was never titled and is being used as a daily commuter for the dealer's human resources director. They want $38,995 and claim that there is no room for negotiation. I had offered $36K but would be willing to pay $37 for it. They claim that their cost is $37. This would be my third car purchase from this dealer in 9 months ('03A4 and '02BoxsterS).
Am I being unreasonable. I told them that if I was trading that car in today that they would only give me $32 for it in trade, yet their book value is at $37. I think I'm being penalized because the car was never titled.
Even w/0 the sunroof the car is nice which is the only reason why I continue to talk to them. Atlas Gray with gray/black and in perfect condition with the remaining new car warranty plus the 2 year/100,000 certified warranty tacked on.
Sorry so long, but would appreciate your thoughts.

Obviously, they think they can sell it to someone else...
...for closer to $39K. Sit tight and see (if you're willing to gamble on losing the car). Otherwise, they've got you where they want you.

Re: Ummm. No Sunroof!!??? Are you sure? I have never heard of one without Sunroof
That sounds like almost full retail for the car. Plus they took FULL depreciation on it, as a buisness tool so they aren't loosing anything. Just looking for a home run.

It's a fair dealer's price...but you'd probably only get $36-37k for it...
if you sold it privately.
I would offer them the $37k...tell 'em that's as high as you will go...and leave that with them to think about..."if you wanna sell it for $37k, I'll take it off your hands today...just let me know"...

At least their starting offer is in the ballpark...
My local dealer has an '02 Green/green 6spd with leather, heated seats, xenon, bose, and sunroof with 10k miles and no extended warranty, on the lot for $44.9k (!!!). I was going to start negotiations at $36.5k, willing to go up to $38k, before I decided to put my AR purchase off for 6-12 months. Edmunds put dealer retail on this car at around $40k. It just irks me that dealers have the gall to offer at such a ridiculous price.
To me, your logic sounds reasonable, but considering the value the extended warranty and tip add to resale, their price doesn't seem to far off base. Just my 2c.

If you feel like you are being penalized, then don't do the deal
If $37K is the best you can do and they think they can sell it for $38K then let them sell it.
Also - don't let them 'claim' their cost is $37K. Ask them to show you the invoice. Selling it at cost wouldn't be so bad considering the they already drove it 12,000 miles AND they get a car off their lot.
Stick to your guns if you really mean it, but as HPH said - be prepared to lose the car to someone else.
