Random observation for the day:
Just driving around yesterday, noticed the driver's side vent control dial is on the left - closest to the door, and the passenger's side vent control is on the... left - closest to the console.
Huh.
They're not the same piece, so why the deliberate nose-thumbing at symmetry? Especially when the defroster vent switches (on top of dash) are mirror images - thus defeating the only explanation I can come up with - it's easier to reach from the driver's seat.
Is this going to bother me? probably not. Do I have too much time on my hands? Definitely.

LOL I'd give you my list but I am taking time to reply so I must have too much time too:)
That or I don't want to do the other stuff Maybe it was Audi's nod to the driver having control over the passenger's control...for when it's just the driver...again won't spend too many brain cells on this either.

Good Eye mate! never even noticed! Perhaps your hunch is correct & the defrost tab was placed..
in its position just to throw you off. I mean come on! No one ever touches the defrost tabs -- unless they're bored & want some excitement!

I find ergonomics really interesting....
...especially after driving Chevy trucks for years- miserable. I would venture that the defrost vents on top have their controls placed so that the operator can feel the flow going onto the window while adjusting the flow(regardless of how often you adjust). Down on the heat/AC vent, you can feel the flow on your face or not, and adjust with either hand. Just my two cents.
After driving my parents' A4, I was hooked on Audis, b/c the interior feels so right. My favorite feature is the damped OH S%*T handles. It all feels good, and reeks of quality engineering.
