Default SCCA Autocross: Narrowing the gap...

Third autocross in allroad: first with S03s in stock size (P6s before). My best was 2.5 seconds off lead in G-stock, which is an improvement of 1.5 seconds, and around 7 seconds off lead time (the usual Corvette Z06). I ran 42/38 pressure.

Observations:

1. Still major understeer in tight corners, and I probably need to increase spread between the tires to get the back to respond more. The class leader in G-stock runs a 10lb difference between front and rear (in a Saturn SC2 with bald super-wide Yokohamas- goes to show, it's not what you drive, its how you drive it...)

2. Vastly better turn in and feel. I actually can start fine tuning technique as the limits are more crisply defined. No more bowl-of oatmeal feel at 10/10ths.

3. I beat an S4! I was the fastest Audi there- an S4, an A4 1.8tqs and a 4000 with trick wheels were the other contenders.

4. The S03s survived nearly unscathed. Did not lose big chunks of sidewall etc.

Default What cars are you up against in G-stock usually?

What mods do the rules allow in this group?

Just curious. I know that the rules stack up in such a way that some cars will never be competitive. Though, like you said, the biggest difference is the driver.

Default Re: What cars are you up against in G-stock usually?

G-stock is a pretty large category, with everything from Ford Focus (including SVT), Nissan Maxima, BMW 318, Neons (even the factory tricked out ones), Subarus including the older Turbo versions, and Audi A4, A6 (all versions- except S6 I think). Apparently, the killer cars are the Legacy Turbo and the 318.

No suspension mods are allowed except for adjustable shocks, or "other modifications to the same line of cars by the factory." Therefore, the PSK bar is legal as it is from the A6 parts bin. Tires and wheels are open season as long as they have a tread wear rating greater than 140.

So yeah, the allroad has pretty hefty competition. I'm thinking that a 2.7t A6 with sport suspension and sticky tires would be substantially more competitive, and still be within G-stock.

Default You are right about the car but wrong about some of the rules...

I have the a6 2.7 with sport and sticky tires. However, the A6 is so much larger and heavier than other cars in the class, it isn't so great. In this region, the Ford Contour SVT does really in this class. I autocross my 84 nissan 300zxt. (F-Stock) I've had much more success with that from '96 til now.

About the rules, unless you are in some kind of street tire category, Stock allows ANY dot tire not just those with wear ratings above 140. (ie BFG Gforce R1 rating of 00, Kuhmo Victoracers rating of 50) The wheels have to be of Stock diameter and width +/- .25" However, any tire that can be mounted on the wheel can be used. I use the stock 16*7 wheels on my Z car with 245/45 on them. The tire shops really hate them, as they are hard to mount.
