show chains

at my ski house this weekend and CHP is cautioning that they may go to D3 Road Conditions by the end of the week (ALL vehicles, inc AWD+snow tires require chains)

i've heard its not advisable to put chains on allroads (something to do with the suspension, etc), so what do you recommend?

Chains may be used on rear wheels only; 16" tires suggested.

I've tried 'em on in the driveway with my 16" winter tires, but never used them.

the dual spoke OEM wheels are 16" right?

dan farmer 01-03-2006 02:11 PM

nope, 17's

Correct; 16s are aftermarket; mine are AT Italia.

Re: show chains

Have'nt looked in my manual for it, but I would think that would be hard on the quattro system, (like running different size tires on f/r axles) particularly when you hit a dry patch of road. Btw, that's another thing I don't miss about Ca. I hated having to drag chains out just because it MIGHT snow. Lived in Vail 10 years and now Bozeman for 2 and never needed chains on any of my cars, even fwd Saab, in any weather/storm, and never been off the road for it either. Sorry bout the rant, I feel better though.

Saabs are great in snow for FWD..

Had an 04 Saab 9-3 Aero with BSR stage 3. Great handling w/ 4 wheel steering. Pushing 310hp/335Tq. Had traction problem due to FWD and wheel hop. I would have stayed with Saab if and when they start offering AWD..

saab question

I had a 2001 9-5 aero (and a 1997 9000aero-- best saab ever made imho) and I was never able to find an aftermarket network that had viable chip/etc. for the trionic ecu. In fact it was the trionic that caused problems for the aftermarket industry as I understood. So how did you get your 9-3 aero up to 310?

JDNAR 01-04-2006 05:15 PM

BSR, Nordic etc... there're many tuners out there..
