Well,the wife got upset(it's ok--she makes more $$ than me, LOL!), because I wanted to buy the new tires b4 selling the BFG. If I could not sell 'em, I'll take my chance with these four snow chains(http://www.tirechain.com/P225-55R-17.htm). Besides although the BFG are summer tires, they still have a lot of rubber tread. My bro-in-law says that traffic in Mammoth city is around 30mph anyways. I think w/ that speed I should be okay running around with chains. 
Anybody there who ran fairly new summer tires last Nov/Dec.in Mammoth?

No way I would run summer tires in Nov/Dec in New England, so I'd probably say the same for your area. Even if the ground was dry the potential for unexpected snow, rain or ice would leave you completely screwed. You could easily find yourself stuck because not enough snow for chains, but too much for the summer tires.

The allroad manual says "Snow chains should only be installed on the rear wheels, never on the front wheels.".
I use the SCC Super Z6 chains on my all season tires with the twin spoke 17" rims. They work great and there is no rubbing or contact.

BTW, you only need the chains on the rear wheels per owners manual.

Like I said., my info was from my tech and dealer in NY. We don't see chains that much here. My sources said that quattrro and chains are not great together.
Personally, I don't know as I've never had to use them.

I'd like to comment on this. Snow chains sound like an excellent alternative to snow tires. However, they are a huge PITA. First you have to deal with what chains go on what rims and putting them only on the rear. Additionally, chains rarely make it on the tire. By the time you need chains it's snowing like crazy, cold, and you're probably stuck in traffic.
If you consider snow tires you have the benefit of excellent traction all the time without getting out of the car and, on all four tires with stock rims. Not only that, snow tires are really "mud and snow tires". They are great for camping or light off-roading. I had chains for my Jetta and they never once made it on the car. I put snow tires on the allroad and the piece of mind is worth every inconvenience and cost of switching tires twice a year.
